It’s hard to tell if Clint Emerson’s survival handbook, “100 Deadly Skills,” is meant to be sincere or tongue-in-cheek. The retired Navy SEAL provides instructions for hot-wiring a plane, disposing of a corpse with jet fuel, and making body armor from books and duct tape.

In truth, the book is a bit of both. And that appeal as a novelty gift and a practical guide to the apocalypse has made it a stealth success story.
